Christian Books – Read and be better

Reading increases our capacity to think and reason. We develop a cognitive mind. By cognitive I mean we are able to think things through logically and solve problem step by step and rationally. Choosing the right book is quite a task too. This is especially true when it comes to Christian books as not every book categorized as Christian is actually Christian. As I said, books are meant to build and this does not exclude Christian books. Therefore, when deciding on reading a book, you should consider the following sentiments.
First, read books of select authors. As you know, a book is only as good as its author. This means that when reading books written by authors who hold negative convictions, you will not be edified. Due to this fact, choosing good books boils down to choosing good authors. To know who the authors are, you need to conduct a valid research. You can go about this by asking people who you trust and you can search for reviews over the internet. When you find an author that is mentioned time and again, it is good that you get hold of his books. Do not just read one of his books as you will not get as much from them as you are supposed to; read as many as possible.
Furthermore, look for books that are difficult. This is because if you want to gain a greater understanding, you should read books that are beyond your level of thinking. The only way to make progress is if you move from a lesser state of understanding to a greater state. This is also one of the reasons as to why you should not always read books by popular authors. I am not denying that the reason they are popular is because they write well. I am just saying that the books they write may not force your mental engagement. Read Christian books that offer spiritual potatoes rather than vitamins.
Moving on, you should read books that have stood the test of time. You have often heard people say that time is a great leveler. Many books have vanished through time. They may have been high last year but this year they are nowhere to be seen. Great books are still here. Christian classics like Confessions by St. Augustine, Bondage of the Will by Martin Luther, Death of Death in the Death of Christ by John Owen, and Religious Affections by Jonathan Edwards are Christian books that are worth the read.
Finally, when it comes to Christian books, you should read books that help you increase in Bible understanding. As a Christian, you should focus on the bible as the author is God. If the writing of men can be dense, then God’s writing can be denser. God has chosen a teacher in the church which is the body of Christ. These teachers write books that teach you more about the Bible. You should only pay attention to books that direct you to the Bible.
