Christian Dating
Falling in love is a process. As much as you hear about falling in love at first sight, it is a very rare case. You have to have known the person for quite some time. You should have gone for some dates, spent time together and so on. In this confusing world, it is quite hard to date as a Christian. You tend to wonder; Christian dating-does it work? My answer is yes as long as you are firmly ground in the word of God which is found in the Bible.
As Christians, we need to have a different attitude about dating. We need to differentiate ourselves from the world. Non-Christians have other perspectives on dating. They are mostly guided by magazines, TV shows, and movies that tell you that you should date a lot of people before marriage. As a Christian you should know that God has more in store for you than just jumping from one relationship to another. He is very clear on whom you should date and the reason why you should date. You should keep in mind that these are not rules.
Let us look at some of the scriptures through which God advices on issues concerning dating. Of course you will never see the word dating in the Bible but you will see the ideas that come with it. First in Genesis 2:24 God says that a man will leave his father and mother and will become one flesh with the wife. Moving on to Proverbs 4:23, God states that we should guard the heart as it is a wellspring of life. Finally, the most common verses that describe love, 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, states, “Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, does not boast and neither is it proud. Love is not rude or selfish, it is slow to anger, and it does not remember wrongdoings. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. Love always protects, love always trusts, always hopes, and love always waits.”
When you look at these scriptures critically, you get an idea about Christian dating. As we have seen in Genesis, God intends for us to meet the one person that we are meant to marry. You are only intended to marry one woman and one man. Therefore it is not necessary to date many people, just the right one. Proverbs tells us that we need to guard our hearts. When you watch movies you hear the word love being thrown around like it has no meaning. As a Christian, keep in mind that love is from God and so we should love Him first before we love others.
In Corinthians we see what love has been defined as and so we should not love in the definition by the world. Love is what should propel you to date. When I say love, I mean the definition by God. Before you start dating, check your potential boyfriend or girlfriend against the values described in 1 Corinthians. Obviously you will not find someone who completely fulfills all of the descriptions. The thing is to find someone who believes in the descriptions.
When you follow these simple biblical guidelines and not get swayed by popular culture, definitely your Christian dating will be blessed and you will prosper.
