Sexual Assault and Rape Statistics

Sexual assault affects many lives—both directly and indirectly. It can span age, sexual orientation, religion, and gender, and affects people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and education levels. Sexual violence is not an isolated problem 

• 1 in 3 women are survivors of sexual violence.  1

• 1 in 4 men are survivors of sexual violence.   1

• 1 in 2 transgender people experience sexual violence.   2

• Every 73 seconds an American is sexually assaulted.   3

• Recent estimates put the cost of rape at $122,461 per victim, including medical costs, lost productivity, criminal justice activities, and other costs.   4

• 3 out of 4 sexual assaults go unreported to police.  5
